Durham a historic city in northeast England. The name originally comes from the Celtic "dun" and the Old Norse "holme", translating as hill fort island. Archaeological evidence suggests the original settlement dates back to around 2000BC.
The River Wear flows around the Romanesque Durham Cathedral and Norman Durham Castle. To the north, the 13th century Crook Hall, surrounded by beautiful gardens and a maze. To the South, the breath-taking Botanic Garden with woodland and tropical plants.
Visit Diggerland for an exuberantly fun day out. There's also a wide variety of museums if you feel like brushing up on your Durham history.
