Scotland’s third most populous city, Aberdeen is a buzzing, busy city. Nicknamed the “Granite City” because during the 19th-20th centuries, Aberdeen’s buildings incorporated locally quarried grey granite, which can sparkle due to the high mica content. Aberdeen is also known as the oil capital of Europe. Aberdeen main industries, apart from granite and oil, include fishing, paper-making, shipbuilding and textiles.
Originally known by the Gaelic Obar Dheathain, loosely translating as "the mouth of the Don", Aberdeen is situated between two rivers - Dee and Don. There's plenty to do in Aberdeen - from discovering the history and tale behind the Battle of Bannockburn, to learning all about Aberdonian whisky at Aberdeen's many distilleries; from getting deep into Aberdeen's fishing and oil history at the Aberdeen Maritime Museum, to getting down with the birds at the North East Falconry Centre. There's a wide range of activities and attractions to suit everyone.
