Dubbed "Barra-bados", Barra is a small, idyllic island in the Outer Hebrides, and is the second southernmost inhabited island, after the adjacent island Vatersay. They are connected by a short causeway. When flying to Barra, your plane lands on the beach.
With a population just over 1,200, the quiet island is great for quiet sightseeing and indulging in the culture of the island. A 2011 census reports that 62% of inhabitants speak Gaelic.
Barra has been the setting for various films including 1949’s Whisky Galore! and its sequel Rockets Galore! The 2006 documentary Extraordinary People: The Boy Who Lived Before and the fifth and sixth series of BBC Two documentary, An Island Parish, also featured the island.
Barra also hosts the annual Barrathon (a half marathon) and the annual hill race, Heaval. Tourists can also go sea kayaking, power kiting and pony trekking – on the rare, native Eriskay Ponies.
